"Green businesses to converge on Newport expo" Alan Smith realized in 2013 that he didn't have enough room for a garden at his Newport Beach home. Because of the space limitations, the avid gardener decided to build himself a hydroponic vertical planter. Hydroponics is a method of growing that doesn't require soil. "Inaugural Newport Expo to help residents go green" Alan Smith, owner of Aloha Urban Farming in Newport Beach, is hitting the sustainable business expo circuit hard. Smith’s business sells hydroponic – a soil-free growing method – vertical planters for vegetables, flowers and other plants that use up to 90 percent less water, he said. "School Launches Sustainable Water-Saving Vertical Farm" When a California parishioner learned that her former high school, Ramona Convent Secondary School in Alhambra, CA was establishing a sustainable farm, she supported an effort to teach students to be good stewards of God’s creation and learn to grow healthy food while saving water.
